Michelle Latimer (Métis/Algonquin) is the showrunner, director and writer of the Viceland breakout series RISE, which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Festival. A Toronto based filmmaker, showrunner/producer, actor and activist, her films have screened at film festivals internationally including: Sundance, Tiff, Rotterdam, Oberhausen and Cannes. Selected films include Choke (Sundance Festival Jury Honourable Mention in International Short Filmmaking, Tiff Canada’s Top Ten), The Underground (Tiff), Nimmikaage (Oberhausen & permanent collection in the National Gallery of Canada) and the feature doc ALIAS (nominated for a Canadian Screen Award). Michelle is currently working on her first dramatic feature The Freedom Project, adapting the bestselling novel The Inconvenient Indian (HBO/NFB) for screen, directing a documentary for Laura Poitras’ company, Field Of Vision, and showrunning the series Red Nation Rising in development for Sienna. She has programmed for ImagineNATIVE, Hot Docs Film Festival and the Dawson City International Short Film Festival.
