Marlena is a filmmaker and plastic pollution researcher based in Seattle, Washington. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Marine Affairs and Visual Journalism from the University of Miami and her Masters in Marine Affairs from the University of Washington’s School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. They Keep Quiet So We Make Noise is Marlena’s directorial debut, but she has spent years working in the film industry in New York City on numerous award-winning films as a camera assistant and grassroots casting director. Marlena’s work focuses on the human rights issues, the human dimensions of environmental change, and how storytelling, activism, and collaborative work that uplifts marginalized voices can bring about positive change.
