A founder of the production companies Cicala Filmworks and Silver Shepherd, Schaefer’s films have premiered and won awards at festivals such as Berlin and SxSW, and been successfully released theatrically, via cable outfits such as HBO and the Sundance Channel, on iTunes and DVD.
In the past five years he’s written, directed and/or produced ten feature films, among them My Last Day Without You, Michael Imperioli’s The Hungry Ghosts, Olaf Johannesson’s The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela, and Arranged. On these and other projects he’s worked with Academy Award winner Melissa Leo, Ali Larter, Zoe Lister-Jones, Nicole Beharie, Ken Duken, and many more.
He has a TV pilot/show in development with Sony Pictures Television, and is directing a feature documentary on poet and environmental activist W.S. Merwin.
Schaefer and his family split their time between Haiku, Maui and Brooklyn.
