Swetha Regunathan

Swetha Regunathan is a writer and director based in DC. She is especially drawn to stories about South Asian-American identity, assimilation, ecology, family, and nostalgia. Her short FOREVER TONIGHT won the Bluecat Screenplay Competition, a grant from the Peter S. Reed Foundation, the Jury Prize at South Asian Film Festival of America and Honorable Mention at Indian Film Festival of LA, and was a finalist for the SHOWTIME® Tony Cox Screenplay Contest. Her short films and music videos have been featured on Short of the Week, NoBudge, Brooklyn Vegan, and Rolling Stone. In 2020, Swetha was selected to participate in the Cine Qua Non Storylines Lab and the 1497 Lab with her feature in development, SUNDARBANS. Swetha was also a 2020-21 IFP Marcie Bloom Fellow. Currently she’s in pre-production on WIRE & CLOTH, awarded a production grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

As a Producer, Swetha’s credits include IF THERE IS LIGHT, which premiered at Tribeca in 2019 and streamed on Hulu and Le Cinema Club; and BETWEEN EARTH & SKY, which received a grant from If/Then Shorts x The Redford Center. She also worked as a Researcher on the Netflix doc-series BOBBY KENNEDY FOR PRESIDENT (2018). Swetha has written, directed, and produced videos for NPR, OpenTable, Vox, Washington Post, P&G, and others. Her prose writing has appeared in HuffPo, n+1, Guernica Magazine, and others. Swetha received an MFA from NYU’s Graduate Film program; a PhD in English Literature from Brown University; and a BA in English from Columbia University.
