FAQs

When is the Festival?

The Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital typically takes place in March. Our 34th Annual Festival dates are set for Thursday, March 19 through Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Where does the Festival take place?

Programs are held at venues throughout the DC area, including universities, embassies, museums, and cultural institutions. In recent years, many of our signature screenings have been held at the US Navy Memorial’s Burke Theatre. For reference, our 2025 Festival venue map can be found here.

How big is the Festival?

In 2025, the lineup included 60 programs, featuring almost 80 films.

How much do Festival tickets cost?

Regular screenings cost $10-15, while some special events cost $25. However, many DCEFF programs are offered free to the public or have pay-what-you-can admission.

Do you offer virtual screenings?

Virtual screenings are no longer offered during the annual Festival. Instead, virtual encore programs are offered during the summer and fall.

Do you host events year-round?

In addition to virtual encores, DCEFF partners with organizations, filmmakers, and other film festivals to present in-person screenings throughout the year. To see what’s coming soon, visit our Events Calendar.

When are submissions accepted?

DCEFF starts accepting submissions in mid-to-late summer. Check social media and our FilmFreeway page for specific dates and details surrounding submissions for the 2026 Festival.

What kinds of films are screened?

DCEFF screens shorts (under 40 minutes) and feature films that illuminate, celebrate, and inspire action for the planet. Films on issues like climate change, environmental justice, conservation, wildlife, Indigenous voices, public health, science, and outdoor adventure, are accepted every year from all over the world.

Does the Festival have any awards?

Yes, in 2025, DCEFF presented four film awards totaling $30,000. Details on our 2026 awards will be released in the fall. All submissions are eligible to be considered for our awards as long as they meet the category and theme requirements. More info on our awards and past winners can be found here.

Do you need volunteers?

Yes! DCEFF volunteers are warmly welcomed to help our staff with various duties during the annual Festival. For their help, Volunteers receive free tickets to attend Festival screenings and events. We are not currently accepting volunteers for our screening committee, but that may change in the fall.

Is the Festival a non-profit organization? What is your EIN?

Yes, DCEFF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our EIN is 83-0469770.
